Goose

Goose was born a happy, healthy, but small puppy.  At seven weeks, my vet discovered he had a hole in his heart that could possibly be fixed with a very expensive surgery.  Not wanting to give up on this beautiful guy with the "goose" marking on his back, I took him to the Ohio State School of Vet Medicine.  At seven weeks he was still a picture of health and a big hit at the clinic where most of the animals looked seriously ill. The bad news came, the hole was
IN his heart, and they don't do surgery on dogs hearts.  So, we went home with an uncertainty on the life expectancy of poor Goose.  Within a month or two I noticed his breathing was heavy and he had a far greyer tongue than normal from lack of oxygen. Still not wanting to euthanize him, I kept him around, thinking of who would be a good home form him to live out his days on a couch.  He was allowed to do what he wanted, no training for manners or walking on a leash!  He seemed happy and playful.  He loved attention and playing through the fence with the other Akitas.  There wasn't a mean bone in his body.  I was in the process of working on a home for him in Texas where some people had fallen in love with him from the beginning.  I did not know how I would get him there, but it was my hope that Lynette and Kirk could spoil him for a long and happy life...  And they were willing and ready to try.  They never got the chance.  Goose passed away as I hoped he would.  He wasn't suffering, he went unexpectedly, and seemed to have died in his sleep. Our hearts are broken, but we are glad he came into our lives.
